Noosa is once again living up to its reputation of producing some of the best young triathletes in the state.
At the recent Queensland School Sports (QSS) State Championship held in Hervey Bay, Good Shepherd Lutheran College had the highest number of triathletes represented out of any school on the Sunshine Coast.
Nine Good Shepherd students, ranging from Years 7 – 12, competed at the Triathlon and Aquathlon QSS State Championships, with the College also having the second largest individual school representation at state level.
Mr Anthony Dyer, principal at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, was very proud of all the students that took part in this very challenging event.
“Every student competed to the best of their ability and achieved some great results,” said Mr Dyer.
“Most notably, both Alexa Leary and Harry Ladd made the Queensland Team to compete at the National School Sports Australia Championships here on the Sunshine Coast in May.”
“Training for triathlons requires a high level of commitment with many young triathletes training six days a week twice a day.
“Many also complete in many competitions throughout the year while also maintaining their rigorous training schedules,” said Mr Dyer.
Both Alexa Leary, Year 12, and Harry Ladd, Year 11, are both very excited about the upcoming national completion.
“The most exciting part about going to Nationals is just being there competing against top-level athletes from around Australia; knowing all the hard work at training has paid off, and finally reaching my goal for the year,” said Alexa
While Harry finds the atmosphere a thrill.
“The most exciting thing about going to Nationals, for me, is the atmosphere as well as the experience of racing against some of the fastest kids in Australia.
“It is also great to see how all of the hard training pays off throughout the race,” said Harry.
After nationals both triathletes will be competing at the upcoming Gatorade Triathlon on the Gold Coast as well as various competitions on the Sunshine Coast, while Alexa will also be heading to Switzerland to compete in the ITU World Triathlon at the end of August.
Adding to Alexa’s list of achievement, at the recent Moolooloba Triathlon she took out first place in the in the 15-19 Age Group, where she was named Australian National Champion for the age group, which means she also qualified to compete at the World Championships in Spain.
“The whole College community is behind Alexa and Harry for the National School Sports Australia Championships and we wish them all the best of luck,” said Mr Dyer.
